A retrofit battery for an existing solar system will typically cost you between $8,000 and $15,000 installed in Sydney, the Northern Beaches and Newcastle, depending on capacity and how tidy your existing setup is. The question isn't really "can I add one" - almost always yes - it's whether the numbers work for your household.
The short answer
For most homes with an existing solar system, adding a battery makes sense right now if two things are true: you're exporting a lot of solar to the grid for very little, and you use a decent chunk of power in the evenings.
Feed-in tariffs have collapsed to around 4-7c/kWh, while you're paying 30c or more to buy that same power back after dark. A battery lets you store your midday excess and use it at night instead of donating it to Ausgrid or Endeavour for pocket change.
If you're out all day, run the dishwasher and washing machine overnight, and your quarterly bill is still solid, the payback stacks up. If you're already self-consuming most of your solar and your bills are tiny, a battery is more about backup and independence than pure savings.
What a retrofit actually involves
There are two paths. If your existing solar inverter is DC-coupled battery-ready (some SolarEdge and Fronius setups are), we can sometimes add a battery to the existing inverter, which is cheaper. More commonly we install an AC-coupled battery with its own inverter that sits alongside your current one.
AC-coupling is the flexible option because it doesn't care what brand your original solar is. It's how we retrofit most of the older systems we see around Dee Why and Charlestown, where the panels went up five or eight years ago and the inverter is still going strong.
The gotchas we check on a quote visit
The first thing we open is your switchboard. Older boards around Mona Vale and Frenchs Forest often don't have the spare space, the correct main switch rating, or surge protection to take a battery cleanly. A switchboard upgrade can add $800-$2,000 that a cheap online quote conveniently leaves out.
The second is your meter and how your solar is currently metered. If you want backup power during a blackout, the battery needs a backup circuit or gateway wired to a subset of your loads - you can't just run the whole house off a typical residential battery. A common mistake we're called out to fix is a battery installed with no backup function at all, because the installer never wired the changeover, and the homeowner assumed it'd keep the lights on during an outage. It won't unless it's set up for it.
We also check where the battery will physically live. Most manufacturers want them out of direct afternoon sun and within a temperature range - a west-facing brick wall in a Newcastle summer is a bad spot that shortens battery life. Garage or shaded south wall is usually the go.
The incentives that change the maths
From 1 July 2025 the federal government's Cheaper Home Batteries program discounts battery installs through the same STC mechanism as solar - it comes off your quote upfront, worth several thousand dollars on a typical unit. That's the big one, and it applies whether your solar is new or years old.
On top of that, NSW has offered its own battery incentive, including an extra payment for connecting the battery to a Virtual Power Plant (VPP). A VPP lets your retailer draw on your stored energy at peak times in exchange for payments - handy, but read the terms, because heavy VPP use cycles the battery harder.
With both incentives stacked, a battery that would've cost $13,000 a couple of years ago can land closer to $8,000-$9,000. That's what's shifted the payback from "maybe in a decade" to something like seven or eight years for a lot of households, and shorter if grid prices keep climbing.
Sizing it properly
Bigger isn't always better. The sweet spot is a battery that fills from your daily solar surplus and empties overnight without sitting half-full. We look at your actual interval data from your retailer, not a guess, and size around your genuine evening and overnight usage.
For a typical family home that's often 10-13kWh of usable storage. Oversizing means you've paid for capacity you never cycle, which drags the payback out for no benefit. If you're planning an EV or a pool pump soon, tell us - that changes the sizing sensibly.
