The question we get asked most on the Northern Beaches isn't "how much will I save?" - it's "will the fridge, the internet and the CPAP machine keep running when the street goes dark?" A battery with proper backup will do that; a battery bought purely on payback maths often won't, because backup is a wiring decision made at install, not a feature you switch on later.

That distinction is the whole point of this post. We install for homeowners across Dee Why, Mona Vale, Frenchs Forest and out to Charlestown, and the ones who are happiest twelve months on are the ones who bought their battery as home insurance - not as a spreadsheet exercise chasing a shrinking feed-in tariff.

Does a battery actually keep the lights on?

Yes - but only if it's set up for backup, and not every install is. A plain "self-consumption" battery still shuts down in a blackout, because grid-connected inverters are required to disconnect (anti-islanding) so they can't backfeed power onto lines a linesman might be working on.

To keep running, the system needs a backup gateway or transfer switch and a dedicated backup circuit (an "essential loads" subboard). When the grid drops, the battery isolates your home from the network within a fraction of a second and powers your chosen circuits. Most modern batteries do this seamlessly enough that you'll only notice because the neighbours' houses went dark.

The catch is capacity. A 10kWh battery might carry your fridge, lights, wifi and a few power points for most of a day, but not the ducted air-con or the oven. During a blackout with sun on the roof, the solar can top the battery back up - though only if the installer has correctly configured the inverter to keep charging off-grid, which is a step some skip.

Why we frame it as insurance, not savings

Feed-in tariffs in NSW have fallen to roughly 4-7c/kWh. That means exporting spare solar earns very little, and the pure savings payback on a battery can stretch past ten years depending on your usage pattern. If you only look at that number, a battery looks marginal.

Insurance works differently. You don't calculate the "payback" on home and contents cover - you pay for the consequence you're avoiding. In a blackout that's spoiled fridge and freezer food, a home office that goes offline, medical equipment that stops, a sump pump that quits during a storm, and the plain discomfort of a house with no lights on a hot Newcastle night.

Ausgrid and Endeavour both do a solid job, but the Northern Beaches cops storm outages every summer, and rural-fringe suburbs around Newcastle see longer restoration times. A battery converts "we're at the mercy of the network" into "we barely noticed." That's the value most homeowners actually want, even when they arrive talking about bill savings.

What a battery costs in NSW right now

As a rough guide, a quality battery installed with backup capability runs from around $9,000 to $16,000 depending on size (typically 10-16kWh) and how much backup wiring is needed. Adding a backup gateway and essential-loads subboard is usually $1,500-$3,000 of that total, so a savings-only system is cheaper - which is exactly why backup gets left off quotes.

The good news is the incentives have improved. The federal battery rebate (delivered through STCs from 1 July 2025) knocks a meaningful chunk off, and the NSW battery incentive can stack on top, including an extra amount for connecting to a Virtual Power Plant. Between the two, we're commonly seeing several thousand dollars come off the sticker price - ask us for current figures on your specific size, as the STC value steps down each year.

The gotchas we check on a quote visit

The first thing we look at is the switchboard, and it's where a lot of quotes come unstuck. Older Sydney homes - plenty around Frenchs Forest and Mona Vale - have boards with no spare space, no main switch that suits a transfer setup, or missing surge protection and RCDs. Bringing that up to standard can add cost, and a cheap quote that ignores it will either fall over at inspection or leave you with a non-compliant install.

The second is metering. If you've got an older meter, adding a battery often triggers a meter reconfiguration or replacement by your retailer, and that can take weeks. We flag it early so you're not sitting with a dead-legal but unusable system waiting on Ausgrid or Endeavour paperwork.

The classic installation mistake we're called out to fix is a battery wired for backup with the essential circuits chosen badly - the ducted air-con lumped into backup so it drains the battery in twenty minutes, while the study and the fridge got left on the grid side. Deciding which circuits are truly essential is a conversation worth having before the cable goes in, not after.
