Is there a solar battery rebate in NSW in 2026?

Yes — but it now comes from the federal government, not a NSW-only battery scheme. The older state programs (Empowering Homes and BESS1) have wrapped up. Today you get the federal Cheaper Home Batteries discount, and you can add the NSW VPP incentive on top (correct as of June 2026).

How much is the federal battery rebate per kWh?

The federal rebate is worth roughly $272 per usable kWh, but only on the first 14 kWh of storage (correct as of June 2026). That's about $3,800 off a 14 kWh battery. The rate steps down each year, so the exact amount depends on when you install.

Is the battery rebate ending on 1 May 2026?

No — that's a sales scare tactic, not the truth. The rebate isn't ending; it stepped down on 1 May 2026 and keeps reducing gradually each year through to 2030 (correct as of June 2026). You haven't missed out, and there's no need to rush a decision.

Can I stack the NSW VPP incentive with the federal rebate?

Yes. The federal rebate and the NSW VPP incentive — up to $1,500, paid through Peak Reduction Certificates — can be claimed together (correct as of June 2026). To get the NSW incentive your battery must be connected to a VPP, and batteries over 28 kWh aren't eligible, so we'll confirm exactly what applies to your system.

Can I add a battery to my existing solar system and still get the rebate?

Yes. Adding a battery to an existing solar system is one of the most common ways people claim the rebate. As long as your solar is in good shape, you don't need to replace anything to qualify — we check that first.

Do I have to apply for the rebate myself?

No. As accredited installers, we apply the discount straight to your invoice — you never deal with the government paperwork. The rebate comes off the price up front, so the figure we quote you is what you actually pay.

Can I claim the rebate on more than one battery?

It's one eligible installation per electricity meter, not one per battery. You can install more than one battery on the same property, as long as the overall install meets the program requirements. If you're planning a larger setup, we'll confirm what qualifies before you commit.

Should I rush to install before 1 May to maximise the rebate?

Not anymore — the 1 May 2026 step-down has already passed, and the rebate now reduces gradually each year rather than at a cliff. The tiering is also designed to discourage oversizing, so size the battery for how your household actually uses power instead of chasing certificates.

How much does a solar battery cost in Sydney in 2026 (after rebates)?

What's the payback period on a home battery?

Most home batteries pay for themselves in about 7–12 years, depending on your usage and tariff. Payback is fastest for households with high evening usage on a time-of-use plan, where the battery offsets expensive peak rates. We'll model your actual numbers before you buy.

Is a solar battery worth it in NSW?

It depends on your evening electricity use, your tariff, and the state of your existing solar. A battery pays off well if you use a lot of power after sunset — but it won't perform on an old or degraded solar system, which is exactly what we check before recommending one.

Can I charge my battery for free with a special energy plan?

Yes. Through our energy partner Globird, you get a free power window from 12pm to 3pm each day to charge your battery at no cost (correct as of June 2026). You also earn a $1 daily credit for every day you draw no grid power between 6pm and 9pm. It's an easy way to push your bills down further on top of the rebates.

What size battery do I need? How many kWh?

Most NSW homes do well with around 13–15 kWh, which also captures the full federal rebate (paid on the first 14 kWh). Larger households, or those wanting more backup, often step up to 30 kWh or more. We size it to your actual bills, not a headline number, so you're not paying for storage you'll never use.

How long will a battery power my home during a blackout?

A typical 10 kWh battery runs the essentials — fridge, lights, internet and phone charging — for around 24 hours. High-draw appliances like an electric stove, oven or dryer drain it far faster, so backup time depends heavily on what you're running.

Can I run my whole house off a battery during an outage?

It's possible, but it needs a much larger and more complex system than most homes require. The cost-effective approach is to back up only your essential circuits — we help you decide which ones actually matter to your household.

What's the difference between kW and kWh?

kWh is how much energy the battery stores — the size of the tank. kW is how fast it can deliver that energy — the engine. You need enough of both: capacity to last the evening, and power to run everything at once.

Can I run my air conditioner and fridge on battery during a blackout?

Yes, as long as your inverter and battery can handle the combined load. A fridge draws 100–800 W, but central air conditioning needs 3,000–5,000 W — so running both may call for a larger or second battery. We check your appliances when we size the system.

Will a battery work with my existing inverter?

Sometimes. Some setups need matching hardware, compatible firmware, or a hybrid inverter to add storage. We assess your existing system's compatibility as part of the quote, so you'll know up front whether anything needs upgrading.

Which battery brands are approved in NSW?

Many CEC-approved batteries are sold in NSW, including AlphaESS, GoodWe, Sonnen, SolarEdge and Fronius. We install and recommend ESY, GoodWe ESA and Sigenergy. How long does a solar battery last?

A quality home battery lasts around 10–15 years, or roughly 3,000–6,000 charge cycles depending on the chemistry. The batteries we install come with strong manufacturer warranties — we'll walk you through the exact terms for the brand you choose.

What is a VPP and do I have to join one?

A Virtual Power Plant (VPP) lets your battery support the grid at peak times in exchange for credits. You don't have to join one for the federal rebate — your battery only needs to be VPP-capable, and every battery we install is. The NSW $1,500 incentive does require connecting to a VPP, which we set up for you.
