It's one of the most common things we hear from homeowners across Sydney, the Northern Beaches and Newcastle. The honest answer is that it depends on your situation, and the maths has shifted a lot in the last couple of years. Let's break down the real costs so you can make a smart decision.

How solar works without a battery

A standard solar system generates power during the day. Your home uses what it needs in real time, and any excess gets exported back to the grid. In return, your electricity retailer pays you a feed-in tariff (FiT). The catch in NSW is that feed-in tariffs have dropped significantly. A few years ago you might have earned 10-15 cents per kilowatt-hour exported. Today, many retailers offer just 4-7 cents, and some are heading lower.

Meanwhile, the rate you pay to buy power from the grid in the evening can be 30-45 cents per kilowatt-hour. That gap is the whole reason batteries have become more attractive. Without storage, you're effectively selling your daytime energy cheaply and buying it back expensively at night.

What a battery actually does for your bill

A home battery stores your excess daytime solar so you can use it in the evening instead of drawing from the grid. For a typical Sydney household that uses a lot of power after work, in the evenings and overnight, this can dramatically cut the amount of expensive grid electricity you buy.

Instead of exporting energy at 5 cents and buying it back at 40 cents, you store it and use it yourself, avoiding that 40 cent charge entirely. On a well-sized system, that's where the real savings live. Many of our customers shift 70-90% of their usage off the grid once they add storage.

The cost of a battery in NSW

As a rough guide, a quality home battery in the 10-13.5 kilowatt-hour range typically costs between $8,000 and $15,000 installed, depending on the brand, capacity and whether you need backup capability during blackouts. Larger systems or those paired with backup gateways cost more.

The good news is that from 1 July 2024, the new federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program is offering substantial upfront discounts on battery installations, reducing costs by thousands of dollars. This has changed the payback equation considerably and made batteries far more viable for the average NSW household.

Working out your payback period

Payback depends on three things: how much you pay for grid power, how much energy you can shift into the evening, and how much the battery costs after incentives. As a simple example, if a battery saves you around $1,200-$1,800 a year on your bills and costs $9,000 after the rebate, you're looking at a payback period of roughly five to seven years. Many batteries are warranted for ten years or more, so there's genuine value beyond that point.

Households with high evening usage, electric hot water, air conditioning or an EV charger tend to see the fastest payback. Holiday homes or households that use most of their power during the day see less benefit.

Reasons to add a battery beyond cost

Cost isn't the only factor. Many Northern Beaches and Newcastle homeowners value blackout protection, especially during storm season. A battery with backup capability keeps your lights, fridge and essential circuits running when the grid goes down. There's also the energy independence and lower carbon footprint that many people simply want.
