The sting isn't your imagination, and it isn't only your usage. This is about where the money actually goes, and what a well-designed solar-plus-battery system can and can't do about it.
Where your bill actually goes
Roughly half of a typical NSW bill isn't the electricity itself, it's network charges, the cost of poles, wires and maintenance across the Ausgrid and Endeavour networks. Those charges have climbed hard over the last two years, and they land whether you use much power or not, via the daily supply charge.
On top of that, the peak usage rate on a time-of-use plan can sit around 45 to 60c/kWh in the late afternoon and evening. That's exactly when most households cook, run air-con and charge devices, and it's when your rooftop solar has already stopped producing for the day.
Meanwhile the feed-in tariff, what you get paid for exporting solar, has quietly collapsed. A few years ago 12c/kWh was normal. Now most retailers offer 4 to 7c/kWh. Exporting solar you could have stored and used yourself is close to giving it away.
The straight answer: how solar-plus-battery helps
Solar alone cuts your daytime grid draw, and if you're home during the day or run a pool pump, hot water or a load of washing while the sun's up, the savings are real. But the maths has shifted. With export rates so low and evening rates so high, the value now lives in self-consumption, using your own power at the times you'd otherwise pay top dollar.
That's the job a battery does. It stores your excess midday generation and releases it across the 3pm to 9pm peak, so you buy far less at 50-plus cents. For an average Northern Beaches family we regularly see grid imports drop by 70 to 90 per cent once a properly sized battery is in the mix.
It also gives you a buffer against the next round of price rises. Every kilowatt-hour you generate and store yourself is one you're not exposed to when network charges climb again. That's the control part, and it's why people who felt helpless about their bills feel very different afterwards.
What it costs and the rebates that apply
A quality 6.6kW solar system in Sydney and Newcastle typically runs $5,500 to $9,000 installed, already discounted by the federal STC rebate, which is applied at point of sale so you don't chase it later. Add a battery and you're generally looking at $8,000 to $15,000 depending on capacity and brand.
The NSW battery incentive, running through the Peak Demand Reduction Scheme, knocks a meaningful amount off battery installs from mid-2024, with an extra incentive if you connect to a virtual power plant. Combined with the STC on the solar, the upfront gap between solar-only and solar-plus-battery is a lot smaller than most people expect.
The gotchas we check on a quote visit
The first thing we open is your switchboard. A lot of older homes in Frenchs Forest and Mona Vale still have ceramic fuses or no main switch rated for a battery backup circuit. If the board needs an upgrade, that's $800 to $2,000 that a cheap online quote conveniently left out, and it's non-negotiable for a compliant install.
The second is your meter. To be paid a feed-in tariff and to run time-of-use correctly you need a smart meter configured for bi-directional metering. We've seen systems installed and left exporting for months with the meter still set up the old way, so the owner earned nothing for their solar.
A common installation mistake we're called out to fix: panels stacked onto a single string facing one direction to save on labour, when splitting them across east and west would have spread generation across the morning and afternoon. On a battery setup that spread matters, because it fills the battery earlier and keeps it topped up longer.
We also look at your actual load profile, not a generic estimate. If you work from home, have an EV, or run ducted air-con, the right battery size is very different from a house that's empty until 6pm. Oversizing wastes money, undersizing leaves you buying peak power anyway.
