Most homeowners in Sydney pay between $1,100 and $2,200 to get a 7kW home EV charger installed in 2026. If your switchboard needs work or the cable run is long, it climbs to $2,500-$3,500.
That spread is wide because the charger itself is the cheap part. What drives the price is the distance from your switchboard to where the car parks, the state of that switchboard, and what your network operator (Ausgrid or Endeavour) lets you put on a single-phase supply. Below is how we price a real job.
What you actually pay in 2026
A straightforward single-phase 7kW charger, mounted within a few metres of the board, in a home with spare capacity, lands around $1,100 to $1,500 fully installed. That's the best-case job we see in places like Frenchs Forest or Charlestown where the garage sits right behind the switchboard.
The mid-range $1,600-$2,200 jobs are the common ones. These involve a 10-20 metre cable run, a new dedicated circuit, a load monitoring device, and tidy cable management down a brick wall or through a carport. Most of our Dee Why and Mona Vale installs land here.
The $2,500-$3,500+ jobs need a switchboard upgrade, a three-phase charger (11kW or 22kW), trenching across a driveway, or a service main upgrade through the network. None of that is optional padding; it's what the standards and your supply require.
The hardware vs the labour
A decent 7kW smart charger costs $700-$1,300 in 2026 depending on brand and features like solar integration, app scheduling and load balancing. Three-phase units run $1,200-$2,000. We fit chargers from the established brands because the cheap imports cause us grief on warranty and firmware.
Labour and materials make up the rest: the dedicated circuit, a Type A or Type B RCD, the isolator, the cable, and the certificate of compliance. Anyone quoting you a flat "$800 installed" without seeing the site is guessing, and the variation will arrive later as an invoice surprise.
The switchboard gotcha that catches people out
The most common mistake we fix is a charger wired onto a board that has no spare capacity and no main switch headroom. An EV charger pulls 32 amps continuously for hours, which is a different beast to a kettle that runs for two minutes. Older boards in the Northern Beaches often still have ceramic fuses or no main switch, and they simply can't take it safely.
On a quote visit, the first thing we check is your main switch rating and your service fuse, then whether your supply is single or three phase. We also look at how much of your existing capacity the air-con and hot water already use, because that determines whether you need load management or a genuine supply upgrade. A load-monitoring CT clamp ($150-$300 fitted) is often cheaper than a switchboard upgrade and keeps you compliant with network limits.
If you've got solar and an older meter, there's a second gotcha. Some legacy metering setups don't play nicely with adding a high-draw circuit, and you may need a meter reconfiguration through your retailer. We flag that before we start so there are no mid-job surprises.
Where solar and batteries change the maths
There's no specific federal rebate or STC discount for the EV charger itself, so be wary of anyone advertising one. The rebates apply to solar and batteries, not the charger. What changes your sums is charging off your own panels.
With feed-in tariffs now sitting around 4-7c/kWh in NSW, exporting your daytime solar earns almost nothing. Charging the car off that same solar instead is worth roughly 25-35c/kWh in avoided grid cost. A solar-aware charger that only draws surplus production turns a worthless export into a genuine saving, and that's the single biggest reason to spend a bit more on a smart unit.
