If your feed-in tariff has dropped to 4-7c/kWh while you're still paying 35c or more to buy power back at night, exporting solar for next to nothing is a losing game. The real question homeowners ask us is simple: how do I keep more of the energy I generate, and get paid properly for the rest?
The answer is shifting from "just put panels on" to "store, manage and trade energy intelligently." That's where AI-driven energy management and virtual power plant (VPP) readiness come in, and it's the next practical step for most Sydney, Northern Beaches and Newcastle homes.
What "AI-driven energy management" actually means
Strip away the buzzwords and it's software that learns your household. It watches your consumption patterns, the weather forecast, your solar generation and live grid prices, then decides when to store, use or export electricity.
In practice that means charging your battery from cheap midday solar, holding it through the evening peak, and only exporting when the grid actually pays a decent rate. Some systems will also pre-cool the house or delay your hot water and EV charging to the cheapest window automatically.
For a home in Frenchs Forest running ducted air-con and a car charger, that kind of scheduling can be the difference between a $400 quarterly bill and something close to zero. The hardware matters, but the brains sitting on top of it are what save the money.
Why VPP-ready systems are the next big step
A virtual power plant links thousands of home batteries together so they can act like one large generator. When the grid is under strain, your battery discharges a small amount and you get paid for it, often far more than a standard feed-in tariff.
With feed-in rates falling on both the Ausgrid and Endeavour networks, VPP participation is one of the few ways left to earn real value from exports. Typical programs pay per event or offer credits worth hundreds of dollars a year, and you can usually set a reserve so your battery never drops below the level you want kept for a blackout.
The key word is ready. Not every battery or inverter can join every VPP, and being locked out of the good programs later is an expensive mistake. We spec systems that are compatible with multiple VPPs so you're not stuck if terms change.
The rebates that make it stack up
Solar is still discounted through the federal STC scheme, which knocks a few thousand dollars off a typical rooftop install depending on system size and the current certificate price. That part is well understood.
The newer piece is the NSW battery incentive, which reduces the upfront cost of eligible home batteries, with an additional benefit for connecting to a VPP. Combined, these bring a quality battery install into a range that actually pays for itself over a sensible period rather than a decade-plus.
As a rough guide, a good 10-13kWh battery and hybrid inverter setup in Sydney typically lands somewhere around $9,000-$14,000 installed before incentives, depending on brand, backup requirements and switchboard work. The rebates take a meaningful chunk off that.
What we actually check on a quote visit
The most common mistake we see on other people's jobs is a battery installed without checking whether the home even has the right metering. If you're on an old accumulation meter or a badly configured smart meter, your solar and battery data won't be read correctly and VPP programs won't accept you. We confirm the meter type and phasing before we quote anything.
We also open the switchboard. Many homes in older parts of Dee Why and Mona Vale still have boards with no room for the extra breakers a battery and backup circuit need, and no main switch surge protection. If a board upgrade is required, we'd rather tell you upfront than surprise you on install day.
For backup, we check which circuits you genuinely want kept alive. Trying to back up the whole house including air-con and the oven usually needs a much bigger battery than people expect. Backing up the fridge, lights, internet and a few power points is far more sensible for the same money.
Getting a system that's ready for what's coming
The smart move now isn't to wait for the "perfect" technology. It's to install quality hardware that's VPP-compatible and controlled by decent energy management software, so you benefit from cheaper night charging, smarter exports and grid payments as the programs mature.
