A decent home battery in NSW now lands somewhere between $8,000 and $15,000 installed, depending on size and how messy your switchboard is. The question we get asked every week on the Northern Beaches is simple: with the new incentives, is it finally worth it?
For a lot of households, the answer has shifted from "not yet" to "yes, run the numbers properly". And NSW is now the busiest battery market in the country. Here's why, and what it actually means for your bill.
Why NSW is leading on batteries
Three things lined up at once. First, the federal Cheaper Home Batteries program (delivered through STCs from July 2025) knocks a meaningful chunk off the upfront price, scaled to your battery's usable capacity. Second, the NSW battery incentive adds a separate rebate on top, with extra money if you connect the battery to a Virtual Power Plant.
Third, and this is the big one, feed-in tariffs have collapsed. A few years back you might have earned 12-15c per kWh for exporting solar. Now most retailers offer 4-7c. Exporting your surplus to the grid barely pays, so storing it and using it at night suddenly makes financial sense.
Put plainly: the same solar export that used to be worth keeping on the grid is now worth keeping in a battery. That maths is why we're seeing strong demand from Dee Why through to Charlestown.
What it means for your bill
If you've got solar and a typical 2-3 person household, you're probably exporting plenty during the day and then buying power back at 30-40c per kWh in the evening. A battery flips that. You store cheap or free solar and draw it down through dinner, the dishwasher and the morning rush instead of paying peak rates.
For most homes we look at, that's $1,000-$1,800 a year off the grid bill once the system is sized right. With the combined rebates lowering the upfront cost, payback periods have come down to roughly 6-9 years on a quality system, sometimes less if you join a VPP and get paid for grid support events.
It's not free money, though. Oversize the battery and you'll never cycle it fully, so you're paying for capacity that just sits there. We'd rather size it to your actual evening usage than sell you the biggest box on the shelf.
The switchboard and metering gotchas
Here's the part homeowners never see coming. A lot of older homes in suburbs like Mona Vale and Frenchs Forest have switchboards that simply aren't ready for a battery. If there's no main switch isolation, no spare DIN space, or the board still has ceramic fuses, that's an upgrade before anything gets wired in. It's the single most common surprise on a quote visit.
The other one is backup. Plenty of people assume a battery automatically keeps the lights on during a blackout. It doesn't, unless it's wired for backup with a dedicated backup circuit and the right inverter. That changes the install, and the price. We'll always ask what you actually want to run during an outage before quoting.
Then there's metering. Depending on whether you're on Ausgrid or Endeavour, your existing meter and tariff may need reconfiguring so the battery's import and export are recorded correctly. Get this wrong and your savings quietly leak away because the retailer is billing you as if the battery isn't there. We sort the metering paperwork as part of the job rather than leaving you to chase it.
What we check before quoting
When we come out, we're looking at your last few electricity bills to see your real evening consumption, not a guess. We check the switchboard condition, the available wall space (batteries need clearance and shouldn't cook in full western sun), and how your existing solar inverter will pair with a battery.
We also confirm your network and current feed-in rate, because the case for a battery is much stronger on a 5c tariff than a 10c one. And we check whether your existing solar is big enough to charge the battery and cover the house. A 4kW array struggling to fill a 13kWh battery in winter is a recipe for disappointment.
A common mistake we see on cheaper installs is undersized cabling between the battery and switchboard, which throttles charge and discharge speed. It passes inspection but quietly underperforms for a decade. We spec the cable run properly the first time.
Getting your numbers right
The NSW battery boom is real, and the incentives won't sit at these levels forever. But the right decision depends on your roof, your bills and your switchboard, not on a headline. The best thing you can do is have someone look at your actual setup and model the payback honestly.
