A home battery in Sydney still costs most people somewhere between $8,000 and $16,000 fitted, depending on size and how tidy your switchboard is. The question we get asked every week on the Northern Beaches and around Newcastle is simple: with the rebates on offer in 2026, does that number actually pay for itself?

Here's our honest take as the people who quote, install and come back when something trips.

The short answer for 2026

For most households, yes, a battery is worth it in 2026 — but the rebate is what tips it from "nice to have" to "sensible". The NSW battery incentive (delivered through the Peak Demand Reduction Scheme) knocks a few thousand dollars off the upfront price, and there's an extra payment if you connect the battery to a Virtual Power Plant.

On top of that, the federal scheme now provides an upfront discount on battery installs as well, stacked through the same STC-style certificate process you already know from solar. Combined, the two incentives commonly take $3,000 to $5,000 off a mid-sized battery before you've paid a cent out of pocket.

Where it stops being worth it: tiny power bills, a north-facing system that's already heavily exported, or a household that's out all day and barely uses evening power. We'll tell you that on the quote visit rather than sell you a box you don't need.

Why batteries make more sense now than two years ago

Feed-in tariffs have collapsed. Plenty of our customers in Dee Why and Mona Vale are now getting 4–7c/kWh for exported solar, while paying 30c or more to buy it back in the evening. Exporting cheap and buying dear is the problem a battery solves.

The maths is straightforward. If you can store 10kWh a day that you'd otherwise have exported at 5c and instead use it at 30c, that's roughly 25c saved per kWh, or about $2.50 a day. Over a year that's close to $900 in avoided cost, before any VPP payments.

That puts realistic payback for a well-sized battery in the 7–10 year range after rebates, against a unit warranted for 10 years and usually lasting longer. Not a get-rich scheme, but a solid return that also gives you backup through Ausgrid and Endeavour outages.

What we actually check before quoting

The rebate is the easy part. The thing that makes or breaks a battery install is your switchboard, and it's where we see the most grief.

A common mistake we fix on older Frenchs Forest and Charlestown homes: a battery and backup wiring jammed into a board with no spare ways, no main switch labelling, and ageing ceramic fuses. To get proper backup that keeps your lights on during a blackout, we need to split essential circuits onto a backup sub-board. If a quote doesn't mention that, it's either ignoring it or planning to surprise you later.

The other gotcha is metering. Many batteries need a CT clamp on the main and sometimes a meter reconfiguration with your retailer. If your existing solar was installed on a single-phase supply but the house is actually three-phase, the battery monitoring won't read correctly without extra hardware. We check phase configuration, available switchboard space and the condition of the main switch before we put a price on paper.

We also look at where the battery will physically live. Garages and shaded south walls are ideal; west-facing brick that bakes all afternoon is not, because heat shortens battery life and can throttle output on hot Sydney days.

Sizing it right (and the VPP question)

Bigger isn't better. We size to your evening and overnight usage, not your daytime peaks. For a typical family pulling 18–25kWh a day, a 10–13kWh battery covers most evenings without paying for capacity you'll never cycle.

Joining a Virtual Power Plant unlocks the extra NSW payment and can add ongoing credits when the grid pays for your stored energy at peak times. The trade-off is that the VPP occasionally discharges your battery when you might have wanted it full. For most homes the credits outweigh that, but if blackout backup is your main reason for buying, read the VPP terms carefully — we go through them with you.

One more practical note: pairing a battery with existing solar is usually cheaper per kWh than adding panels and a battery at once, but only if your current inverter and roof are in good shape. We assess both rather than assuming.

Getting a real number for your place

The rebate amounts and the right battery size both depend on your bill, your switchboard and your network area, so a generic online figure won't tell you much. The most useful thing we can do is look at your last few bills, inspect your board, and give you a fixed price with the 2026 rebates already applied.
