A whole-home surge protection device fitted at your switchboard runs about $300 to $800 in Sydney, depending on your board and how much rewiring the job needs. The real question is whether that spend beats the cost of replacing a fried heat pump, solar inverter or a house full of electronics after one bad storm.
The short answer: yes, for most homes
For most NSW homes, whole-home surge protection is worth fitting. The maths is simple. One decent surge event can take out an inverter ($1,500-$3,000), a ducted air con controller ($800+), or a fridge and a couple of TVs in one hit.
A surge protection device (SPD) at the switchboard clamps voltage spikes before they travel through your circuits. It's not glamorous, and you'll never notice it working, which is exactly the point.
Where it's most worth it: homes with solar or batteries, ducted air con, home offices, or anyone in an area that cops regular summer storms and grid switching events. On the Northern Beaches we see this a lot around Mona Vale and Dee Why after big southerlies roll through.
What actually causes surges in NSW homes
Lightning gets the blame, but direct strikes are rare. Most damage comes from smaller, more frequent events: the grid switching loads, a fault down the street, or your own big appliances (air con, pool pump, oven) cycling on and off.
On the Ausgrid and Endeavour networks, we also see surges after a supply outage is restored. The power comes back with a spike, and that's when older electronics tend to die. A switchboard SPD handles all of these, not just the dramatic lightning ones.
If you've got solar, there's an added angle. Your inverter is grid-connected and sits right in the firing line. Replacing one after a surge, then waiting weeks for the network to reconnect and re-approve, is a genuine hassle we'd rather you avoid.
The installation gotchas we check on site
An SPD only works if it's earthed properly and installed with short, direct connecting leads. The single most common mistake we see from a cheap job is long, looping SPD leads coiled inside the board. Long leads add impedance, which lets the spike through before the device can clamp it. The lead length matters as much as the device itself.
The other gotcha is space and switchboard age. Plenty of older boards around Frenchs Forest and Charlestown are packed tight with ceramic fuses and no room on the DIN rail. Fitting an SPD often means we recommend a board upgrade at the same time, which changes the price.
When we quote, we check three things: whether there's a main switch and RCDs to code, whether the earthing is sound (an SPD earthed to a dodgy stake does nothing), and whether your service is single or three-phase. Three-phase homes need a three-phase SPD, which is a bigger unit and a higher cost.
Layered protection: switchboard plus point-of-use
The switchboard SPD is your first line and handles the big stuff. For sensitive gear, a good point-of-use surge board (a proper one, not a $15 powerboard) adds a second layer right at the device.
We'd put point-of-use protection on the home office setup, the main TV and AV rack, and any medical equipment. You don't need it on every outlet in the house. Two layers gets you the vast majority of the protection for a sensible spend.
Worth knowing: SPDs wear out. They take hits over time and eventually stop protecting. Quality units have an indicator window that goes from green to red. If yours is red, it's done its job and needs replacing, and that's a five-minute swap for us.
When it's less worth it
We won't pretend it's essential for everyone. A small flat with minimal electronics and no solar, on a stable part of the network, gets less value from it. And if your switchboard needs a full upgrade to fit one, we'll be honest that the SPD is the cheap part of that job.
That said, if you're already having switchboard work, a new solar or battery system installed, or an EV charger fitted, adding an SPD at the same time costs very little on top of labour that's already happening. That's the smart time to do it.
