The question we get on nearly every quote visit is the same: "Do I need three-phase power for my solar and battery, and what's it going to cost me?" For most homes the honest answer is no, and upgrading just for solar is often a waste of $3,000 to $6,000 you don't need to spend.
But it's not that simple for every property. Here's what the difference actually means for a NSW home, and where it genuinely matters.
The short version: what single- and three-phase mean
Single-phase power is one active wire delivering electricity to your home at 230V. Most houses across Dee Why, Mona Vale and the older parts of Charlestown run on it, and it comfortably handles the average family load.
Three-phase uses three active wires, giving you three separate 230V supplies (or 400V across phases). It delivers roughly three times the capacity to the property. You'll often find it on larger newer builds, homes with ducted air-con, pools, workshops, or anything running big motors.
The quickest way to tell which you have: open your meter box and count the main switch poles. A single wide breaker feeding the main switch usually means single-phase; three linked poles means three-phase. If you're not sure, send us a photo and we'll tell you in a minute.
Does it change your solar system?
For a standard 6.6kW to 10kW rooftop system, single-phase is completely fine. The federal STC rebate applies the same way regardless of phase, knocking roughly $2,000 to $3,000 off a typical install depending on system size and the STC price at the time.
Where phase matters is the inverter export limit. Ausgrid and Endeavour both cap how much you can push back to the grid per phase. On single-phase, that's commonly limited to a 5kW inverter export in many areas, though you can often install a larger system (say 10kW of panels on a 5kW inverter) and simply cap the export.
On three-phase you can export more, because the limit applies across three phases. That only helps if you're actually generating a lot and want to sell it, and with feed-in tariffs now sitting around 4 to 7c/kWh, exporting more is worth far less than it was five years ago. Self-consumption and a battery beat export every time now.
Batteries and the three-phase trap
This is where we see the most confusion. If you have three-phase power and want whole-home backup during an outage, a single-phase battery will only back up the phase it's connected to. Your lights might work but your three-phase ducted air-con won't, or vice versa.
To back up the whole house on three-phase you either need a three-phase battery system or careful planning about which circuits sit on the backed-up phase. This is exactly the kind of thing we map out on site, because getting it wrong means paying for backup that doesn't cover what you assumed it would.
The NSW battery incentive (the PDRS) can bring a battery within reach, with rebates that scale by capacity and a further incentive for connecting to a virtual power plant. It applies on both single- and three-phase homes, so the phase choice comes down to your backup needs, not the rebate.
What we check before recommending an upgrade
On a quote visit we look at the switchboard first. A common mistake we clean up after other installers is a solar inverter wired to an already-full or ageing board with no room for the required solar breaker and isolators. That's a rewire cost people didn't budget for.
We also check the metering. Older meters sometimes need swapping to a smart meter before solar can be commissioned, and on three-phase properties we confirm the meter measures all three phases correctly, otherwise your bill and feed-in credits can read wrong for months.
Upgrading from single- to three-phase means new supply from the street, a new meter, switchboard work and network approval. Depending on the run to the street and whether it's overhead or underground, expect $3,000 to $8,000 or more. In a place like Frenchs Forest with underground supply, it can climb higher again.
So when is three-phase actually worth it?
Upgrade if you have genuine three-phase loads coming: ducted air-con on a large home, an EV charger you want running fast alongside heavy appliances, a workshop with three-phase machinery, or a big solar-and-battery setup where you want full-home backup and higher export headroom.
Don't upgrade purely because you read that three-phase is "better" for solar. For the vast majority of Sydney, Northern Beaches and Newcastle homes we work on, a well-designed single-phase system with a battery delivers the same real-world savings for thousands less.
