If you installed solar five years ago expecting your feed-in tariff to cover the bills, you've probably noticed the credits shrinking every year. The honest answer most homeowners want is simple: a good solar system now costs $5,000-$9,000, but on its own it no longer clears your bill the way it used to.

We install across Sydney, the Northern Beaches and Newcastle, and the conversation has changed. Solar is still worth doing. But solar without a battery leaves a lot of value on the table, and here's exactly why.

The feed-in tariff has quietly collapsed

A few years back, retailers were paying 12-15c/kWh for the power you exported. Today most plans sit at 4-7c/kWh, and some have dropped it further for new customers. Meanwhile you're buying that same power back in the evening for 30-45c/kWh.

That gap is the whole problem. On a typical home in Dee Why or Charlestown, a 6.6kW system might generate 26kWh on a good day, but you're only home to use a fraction of it. The rest gets sold for peanuts and bought back at peak rates after dark.

A battery stores that surplus so you use your own cheap solar at 6pm instead of exporting it for 5c and repurchasing it for 40c. That's the core of the case for pairing, and it only gets stronger as tariffs keep falling.

What a battery actually changes

Most households self-consume only 30-40% of their solar without storage. Add a properly sized battery and that jumps to 70-85%, which is where the bill really shifts. You're covering the evening cook, the aircon, the pool pump and the EV charge with power that cost you nothing to make.

There's also backup. In parts of the Northern Beaches and the Newcastle fringe where storms drop the network, a battery with a backup circuit keeps your fridge, lights and internet running through an outage. Not every battery does this out of the box, so it's worth specifying if it matters to you.

A common sizing mistake we correct: people buy a battery far bigger than their evening load, then it never cycles fully and the payback stretches out. For most Sydney homes on Ausgrid or Endeavour, a 10-13kWh battery matches real usage better than jumping straight to 20kWh.

The rebates worth knowing about

The federal STC scheme still discounts your solar panels upfront, typically knocking a few thousand off a 6.6kW-10kW system depending on the day's certificate price. That's already baked into most quotes you'll see, so check whether the number you're shown is before or after STCs.

For batteries, the NSW battery incentive now provides a meaningful upfront discount through the Peak Demand Reduction Scheme, with an extra amount if you connect to a Virtual Power Plant. Between the two, a quality 10kWh battery that once sat around $12,000-$14,000 installed lands closer to $8,000-$11,000 for many households.

Numbers move with certificate markets and eligibility, so treat these as a realistic guide rather than a fixed quote. We run your actual usage and roof through it before giving you a figure.

What we check before we quote

The first thing we look at on a site visit is your switchboard. Older boards in places like Frenchs Forest and Mona Vale often have no spare space, no main switch that meets current standards, or ageing ceramic fuses. Adding a battery frequently means a switchboard upgrade, and a quote that ignores this is either incomplete or hiding a variation you'll cop later.

The second is metering. If you've got an older solar setup, your existing inverter and meter configuration may not support battery charging and discharging cleanly, and some retailers need a meter reconfiguration before your feed-in and battery settings work correctly. It's a paperwork step people forget, and it can hold up commissioning.

We also check whether your existing panels are worth keeping. Sometimes the smart move is a battery-ready inverter now and extra panels later; other times the old string inverter is the bottleneck and replacing it unlocks a much better result. We'll tell you straight either way.

Is it worth it for your home?

If you're out all day and use most of your power at night, the pairing case is strong and the payback usually sits in the 6-9 year range with current rebates. If you're home during the day and already self-consuming most of your solar, a battery still helps but the maths is tighter, and we'll say so.

An EV changes the equation again. Charging a car overnight on stored solar rather than grid power is where a lot of Newcastle and Northern Beaches households find the battery pays for itself faster than they expected.
