The question we get asked most in Dee Why and Charlestown right now is simple: do I pay the premium for a Tesla Powerwall, or does the ESY Sunhome do the same job for a few thousand dollars less? Fitted and switched on, a Powerwall 3 job in Sydney typically lands around $13,500–$16,500, while an ESY Sunhome all-in-one usually comes in around $9,000–$13,000 depending on size and your switchboard.

Both are good units. The right one depends on how much backup you actually want, how your existing solar is set up, and what your switchboard can take without an expensive upgrade.

The short answer

If whole-home backup and dead-simple operation matter most, the Tesla Powerwall 3 is the easier recommendation. It has a large 13.5kWh usable capacity, a strong built-in solar inverter, and its backup switching is about as seamless as it gets — the lights barely flicker when the grid drops.

If you want a lower price and a modular system you can grow later, the ESY Sunhome makes a lot of sense. It's a hybrid inverter-and-battery combo that scales in blocks (commonly 5kWh, 10kWh, 15kWh), so a smaller home in Mona Vale can start with 10kWh and add more when the next kid moves out or the EV arrives.

For most three or four-bedroom Sydney homes with a 6.6kW–10kW solar array and a decent daily usage, we'd size somewhere between 10kWh and 15kWh either way. The Powerwall wins on backup polish; the Sunhome wins on price and flexibility.

Rebates and what you'll actually pay

From July 2024 the federal battery incentive (delivered through STCs, the same scheme as solar) knocks a meaningful chunk off the upfront cost — often $2,000–$4,000 depending on battery size and the STC price on the day. The NSW battery incentive can stack on top, and there's an extra amount if you later connect the battery to a Virtual Power Plant.

The prices we quoted above already assume the federal discount is applied at point of sale, so you're not waiting to claim anything back. Both Tesla and ESY Sunhome are VPP-capable, so the incentives apply to either — this isn't a reason to pick one over the other.

The bigger financial driver is your feed-in tariff. Export rates across Ausgrid and Endeavour have fallen to roughly 4–7c/kWh, so exporting cheap solar makes little sense. A battery lets you store that afternoon surplus and use it at 40c-plus in the evening, which is where the payback comes from.

Backup: not all batteries do it the same way

This is where a lot of homeowners get caught out. A battery with backup does not automatically power your whole house during an outage — it depends on how it's wired and how much load you throw at it.

The Powerwall 3 can support whole-home backup with a Gateway, and it'll comfortably ride through the evening for lights, fridge, Wi-Fi and a few power points. Run the oven, the kettle and ducted air-con all at once and any battery will trip on overload — that's physics, not a fault.

With the ESY Sunhome, backup is usually configured on a dedicated essential-loads circuit. That's often the smarter, cheaper approach for a Frenchs Forest home that just wants the fridge and lights kept alive during a storm, rather than the entire house.

The switchboard and metering gotchas

On a quote visit, the first thing we photograph is your switchboard, not your roof. Plenty of older Northern Beaches homes still have ceramic fuses or no main switch RCD, and NSW wiring rules mean we can't add a battery without bringing that board up to standard. That's a real cost — budget $800–$2,500 for a board upgrade if yours is dated — and any quote that ignores it isn't a real quote.

The second thing we check is your meter and metering type. If you've got an old solar setup on a gross meter, or a basic single-phase supply near its limit, adding a battery and future EV charger can force a supply upgrade with the network. Better to know that now than after the install.

A common installation mistake we see from cheaper mobs: wiring the whole home through the battery's backup output when it isn't rated for that load, so the system trips constantly and the owner assumes the battery is faulty. The essential-loads sub-board takes ten more minutes to plan and saves years of frustration.

So which one for your home?

Choose the Tesla Powerwall 3 if you value the strongest whole-home backup, a single trusted brand, and don't mind paying for it. Choose the ESY Sunhome if you want a lower entry price, modular capacity you can expand, and essential-loads backup that covers the outages that actually happen in Sydney.

If your existing solar inverter is still healthy and out of warranty range, both can be added as AC or DC-coupled depending on the setup — that decision alone can swing the price by a thousand dollars, so it's worth getting right.
